What did your personal big AHA moments look like when you saw through a LIE or suddenly understood a TRUTH?
by Fernando in"what is an aha moment?
it's a moment of clarity, a defining moment where you gain real wisdom - wisdom you can use to change your life.".

Mine was more the thousand little cuts that bled me to death, with a few big AHAs that bled the JW completely out of me. A couple stick in my mind, like the time in 2012 I visited the local cemetery and looked at the old graves (100-130 years old; my area is not very old in the scheme of civilisation) and I noticed that many of the old graves were those of children, teenagers and young adults. Comparing to the new graves who were mostly of people in their 70s-90s, I thought, "How could the world be worse to live in than ever before when people are living longer than ever before? How can it really be the last days?"
Another time, by the time I was having doubts, in late 2012, I bought a King James Bible and started reading it to get another perspective, and suddenly it hit me that Jesus' actual message was far different and far simpler to what the WT says it was. I had an incredible moment of revelation.
The next big one was when the Inquisition arrived at my house and grilled me for ages about so-called 'apostate' stuff I put on Facebook. Oh boy the thought police hammering me made me realise they had something to hide.

Terry Grundy, Ray Cowling, Howard Cox (now there was a man who was a hardcore guilt tripper) and a bunch of others. Seen Don McClean give a zillion talks, and Terry O'Brien too. The latest in my circuit was this hot shot young fella named Grant Driscoll.

How can I stay motivated for field ministry?
by jgnat inthus asks my beloved and slow-on-the-uptake jw hubby, who is finding it increasingly difficult to drag himself out the door.
so far, i've tried to avoid sarcastic comebacks (i'ts boring and useless!
duh!

What worked for me with my JW hubby was a number of things, such as 'did you know' factlets about say the Pentacostals, Mormons or SDAs who attract more converts than JWs and they don't go door to door. If the cultist isn't triggered, you can say something like, "I guess their methods are more effective".
Also, on a Saturday morning decide you're going to make him a big batch of his favourite breakfast. Huge pan cakes helped my husband see that witnessing was not so important as he thought lol.

The Gates of Hell found
by fulltimestudent inin matthew 16:18 the author of matthew's gospel makes an intriguing reference to a well-known (in the ancient world) pagan site.. part of the verse says, in the nwt (old)-grin -.
" ... i will build my congregation, and the gates of hades will not overpower it.".
discovery magazine discusses archeology of the site.

Gosh, what do you do with people like this?
by Julia Orwell inok i'm chatting on facebook with a guy who's studying with jws, who isn't yet an unbaptised publisher because he can't kick the cancer sticks.
now i don't believe in the bible anymore, but i say i do to get a bit of common ground with this guy.
it's a common attitude among jws.

Thx. To be perfectly honest, I have nothing invested in this guy. He's certainly a weirdo and if he doesn't want to research the facts it's his funeral. Sad to see ppl get sucked in, but these days there's little excuse for intelligent ppl with internet not to look deeper into what they're being told.

How jw parents do their best to make their some feel guilt
by will-be-apostate ini've got a 6 years old brother who recently expressed his concerns about my spirituality.
he said that he had a dream about me being dead (i am at college, far away from my parents).
he also told my parents that he was afraid i would no longer be a jw and in that case he wouldn't hug me again anymore; and that he was crying and felt very sad.. my dad called me today and told me all this and more.

I can't imagine what you're going through. Emotional blackmail of the worst kind. If I were you, and I'm not, I'd reassure my little bro of your love and try to spend time with him just doing fun stuff so he forms good memories for later on in life.

WTS overboard w/suggested presentation
by doinmypart inthe nov 2013 km contains an article that is ridiculous in its level of minutae.. they focus on the word "because".
they tell jws to use the word "because" when explaining why they're at the homeowner's door.
writing department, you wrote an article on the use of the word "because"?
-
Julia Orwell
Interesting that KM doesn't actually tell the publishers to tell the householders the real reason they are at their door. They tell you to say something like, "We are here because people are concerned about crime..." WRONG! We didnt' go to their door because people were concerned about crime or whatever. A police officer or security screen sales person would come to your door because 'people are concerned about crime.'. JWs are at their door because they are told that if they're not, they'll miss out on life. They are there because they have to be.
So a truthful presentation would be, "Good morning. My name is Julia and this is my friend Jasmine. We have come because we believe that we will die at Armageddon if we don't. If we stayed home this morning and slept in, or went shopping or took the kids out, we would have been crushed with guilt that we were not 'seeking first the kingdom. We don't really care about you, but if we don't come to your door, God won't love us. Have you ever felt so compelled to do something that when you didn't do it you felt your very life was at stake? [allow for answer]
and so on and so forth.

We Played Along With Our Own Oppression
by cofty inin communist east germany (gdr) writers were provided with a 'helper' - often a stasi agent - who would 'assist' the work through to publication.. poet and novelist gunter kunert described how this led to a sort of self-censorship.
it reminded me very much of the way jws can be trained to accept outrageous restrictions while imagining they are making free choices.. -----------------------------------------------------------------.
"as authors we were always trying to be ahead of the censor, to second-guess his instinct as to what was 'in' and what was 'off'.

True. We were victims yes, but we enabled these abusers too.

New Article on BEARDS and Attire of Jehovah's Witnesses
by jwfacts ini have had requests to add an article about beards and jehovah's witnesses.
it is interesting that there is virtually no statement that says a witness cannot have a beard, yet universally they do not have beards.
i have scoured quotes from all the threads on jwn, all references to beard on the cd watchtower library, and copies of elders letters that i have.

It's interesting you also mention your time in TI and having to wear a tie. I lived in Cairns for a couple of years and it blew my mind that the brothers had to get around in the tropical heat witnessing in ties, when no one else in the whole city ever wore a tie, even all the business workers who were indoors all day. My boss wore a tie maybe on Awards night only! Yet when visitors came from TI they wore sarongs and shirts with no ties at the meetings. The tie is like the JW male burqua.
